Assistants API Sunsets August 26: Move to Responses API
OpenAI's Assistants API beta dies August 26, 2026. Responses has feature parity — code interpreter, persistent threads, MCP — plus a migration guide.
If your production stack still calls the Assistants API, the clock runs out Wednesday: OpenAI’s Assistants API beta sunsets on August 26, 2026, and any code still relying on it needs to be on the Responses API by then.
Key facts
- The deadline: August 26, 2026 — announced a year in advance in OpenAI’s deprecation notice.
- The replacement: the Responses API, which OpenAI says has now reached feature parity with Assistants.
- The migration path: an official guide at platform.openai.com/docs/assistants/migration.
What you’re moving to
Assistants was OpenAI’s early agent framework, built before reasoning models existed. The Responses API folds in everything Assistants did well and adds what it never had:
- Carried-forward features: code interpreter and persistent conversations work as before.
- Built-in tools: deep research, MCP support, and computer use are first-class tools in Responses.
- Single-call workflows: multi-step tasks can run across tools and model turns in one call.
- Reasoning preservation: with GPT-5-family models, reasoning tokens persist between turns instead of being recomputed.
Adoption has already tipped: Responses overtook Chat Completions in token activity before this deadline, making it OpenAI’s recommended integration surface. The ecosystem moved with it — DeepSeek’s V4-Pro GA shipped native Responses API support (our coverage), so porting off Assistants also unlocks multi-provider routing on the same interface.
Why it matters
This is the quiet end of the first-generation agent API era. Assistants treated agents as threads with tools bolted on; Responses treats them as stateful reasoning loops with native tool use, which is where the whole market has converged — see Codex’s rise as an async coding agent (our coverage). Teams that miss Wednesday’s cutoff face broken integrations at exactly the moment Sol-class pricing makes high-volume agent traffic cheap enough to scale.
Migration checklist
- Map each Assistant to its Responses equivalent: threads → persistent conversations; retrieval/file search → built-in tools.
- Replace
runpolling with single-call multi-step invocations where possible. - Re-test token budgets: preserved reasoning tokens change cost profiles (in your favor, post-price cut).
- Follow the official migration guide rather than rewriting from scratch.
